The new BMW Cafe Racer is a modern take on the classic BMW R40. It has all the makings of being a high performance, sporty and fast car. So is it the real thing or just another hot concept?
Well, the BMW Cafe racer K75 makes use of BMW's modular engineering philosophy to produce a vehicle that is both fast and powerful. The K75 chassis features a front splitter and side skirts as well as a diffuser on the side. For the engine, it uses BMW's modular M TwinPower Turbo I-Tech engine and a BMW Motorsport-developed turbocharger. BMW also fitted the car with BMW Racing brakes and an exhaust system which are designed by the company's motorsport department.
BMW did not just slap together some concepts and slap a few parts onto the K75. The designers did extensive research and built on the research to produce a completely bespoke vehicle. BMW has made use of extensive wind tunnel and racing data to develop the car. With this data, BMW engineers have been able to fine tune the design of the new BMW Cafe racer.
As with all BMW's, the BMW Cafe Racer K75 has the same styling of all BMW's. The car looks very much like a regular BMW, though there are some big differences. For one, it uses BMW's popular 'mild alloy' for its body work. This allows the engineers to create a very smooth ride while ensuring the car is still highly durable. The bodywork itself is made of carbon fibre and it is painted in metallic grey. There is also an aluminium bonnet, which is painted black.
The BMW K75 is powered by BMW's M TwinPower Turbo I-Tech engine which is located inside the cabin. It features a twin-scroll turbocharger, twin intercoolers, twin mufflers and twin tailpipes. The car also uses a standard BMW brake calipers, Brembo brakes as well as ABS brakes. It also features a limited slip differential as well as a limited slip differential in the car's drivetrain.
BMW is claiming that the new BMW Cafe Racer K75 will have a 0 to 60mph time of 2.2 seconds. This is faster than the current BMW R40's record of 2.1 seconds. It should also be noted that the BMW Cafe Racer's maximum speed is limited to 125 mph, though it's estimated that the car will achieve 150 mph. when used in full wet conditions.
