The BMW R90 cafe racer is one of the more exciting and unique cars to come along in recent years. Built on the chassis of the BMW E9, the car is actually a mid-engine sports car that has been built from scratch, with the intention of creating a car that can do well in the streets as well as being well suited to the track.
The BMW R90 cafe racer was first conceived back in the eighties as a means of racing on public roads in Europe. However, the BMW company saw this as a way for a company to get more people interested in the brand, so they set about building the car to compete in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race every year. This led to the car being known as the BMW E9, which stands for 'eccentric' and the racer was later called the BMW R90.
The original concept was developed by Hans-Joachim Stuck in order to create something that was different from the typical German road car of the time. It was the first of its kind to actually have an off-road track to race on, so the car was built for speed rather than outright track prowess. Although it was a bit slow compared to other European sports cars at the time, it was well above the norm for a German sports car.
When BMW released its official website last week, it confirmed the development of the R90 concept into a car that could run well on a public street. This would of course, mean a slight change in the general design and layout of the car. It is now expected that the new design will look very similar to the current BMW E9 road car, although with some obvious differences that set it apart.
The latest model of the BMW R 90 cafe racer, which is due to be released next month, is expected to feature a body kit, carbon fibre wheels and a lower suspension system than the current model. The engine, on the other hand, is expected to stay largely the same, with the exception of some slight changes to the fuel delivery system and an electric starting system. A new exhaust system is also thought to be on the cards for the future.
It will be interesting to see what the BMW company does when it comes to the production of the next generation of the R90, with so many changes to the design and architecture of the current model already announced. It's possible that this is the beginning of something that the company may look to build for many more years to come. Although this is unlikely at this stage, it's always worth looking forward to the next exciting BMW design and concept that the company puts forward.
